Heat exchangers

heat exchanger

A heat exchanger is a device built for the efficient transfer of heat from one medium to another. Heat exchangers are very much used in the food and beverage industries for heating and cooling products in sterilizing systems, pasteurizers, enzymatic deactivation, etc.

They are also used in auxiliary systems such as water heating systems, steam generations, recovery systems, fluid coolers, etc.

Types of heat exchangers

Tubular heat exchangers

This is the simpler heat exchanger. It consists of a straight tube with one or more inner plain or corrugated tubes situated on a shell. They are easy to install, modify and readapt in the future.

They are used for treating products with solids, enzymatic deactivation processes, and products with high viscosity of up to 2000 cps. Used for processes such as fruit sterilization, marmalade processing, vegetable cubes sterilization, etc. They are designed for pressures of up to 50 bars.

Shell and Multi tube heat exchangers

They are used for products with viscosity of up to 500 cps and liquids with small solids. Also used for high pressure applications greater than 30 bar.

They consist of a shell with a bundle of tubes inside. One set of tubes contains the liquid to be treated and the other set of tubes are heated or cooled. The tubes diameter is between 6 to 35 mm. The set of tubes might be composed by several types of tubes.

They are used for example in natural juice pasteurization with high fiber content, indirect UHT systems, etc.

Annular heat exchangers

They consist of a triple tube where the product to be treated goes in the tube in the middle and the cooling and heating liquids in the tubes on the sides.

They are used for high viscosity products such as pastes, sauces, or fruit and vegetable concentrates.

An example of their application is for sterilizing tomato concentrate at 30 brix with 200 bar pressure.

MachinePoint designs and manufacturers different annular heat exchangers with pressures from 20 to 300 bar.

Scraped surface heat exchangers

These heat exchangers are required in crystallization processes, cooling at very low temperatures or heating of products with high viscosity up to 20.000 cps.

MachinePoint develops and manufacturers different types of scraped surface heat exchangers.

Plate heat exchangers

It is composed of multiple thin, separated plates with large surfaces, so that the liquid phases through them. They are the best option for heating and cooling liquids without pulp such as apple juice, milk, wine, water, etc.

They are fabricated in stainless steel and customized for each customers and product needs.

Used Heat exchangers

Considerations regarding used heat exchangers

How does the heat exchange process work in industrial machines used for beverages, dairy, film conversion, and other products?

he heat exchange process involves transferring heat from one fluid to another to heat or cool a product. In machines for beverages, dairy, and film conversion, heat exchangers can be used to heat or cool liquids, creams, or plastic materials, ensuring they are at the optimal temperature for processing.

What are the important factors to consider when selecting used heat exchangers for my business?

When selecting used heat exchangers, it’s important to consider size, heat transfer capacity, compatibility with the fluids and materials used in your process, as well as the supplier’s reputation and equipment maintenance history.

What is a heat exchanger and what is it used for?

A heat exchanger is a device designed to transfer heat from one fluid to another without them mixing. It is used to heat, cool, or control the temperature of various industrial processes and applications, ensuring efficient and controlled thermal exchange.

What types of heat exchangers are there?

There are several types of heat exchangers, including plate, tubular, scraped surface, double-tube, shell and tube, among others. Each type has specific characteristics and applications, adapting to different heat transfer needs in the industry.

What is the most commonly used heat exchanger?

The most commonly used heat exchanger varies depending on the application and industry. However, plate heat exchangers and tubular heat exchangers are two of the most common and versatile types due to their efficiency and ability to handle a variety of fluids and temperatures.
