The Windmöller & Hölscher Varex is a modular blown-film coextrusion platform spanning three- to eleven-layer structures, and the reference multi-layer line in the film extrusion subsector. Available across generations including the Varex II, Coex and Filmatic derivatives, as well as monolayer builds, it serves film producers manufacturing everything from simple PE films to high-barrier multi-layer structures. The platform's scalable extruder and die configurations make it a benchmark for converters requiring flexibility across packaging, barrier and industrial film programmes.
Documented Varex lines run from 3 up to 11 extruders and layers, processing LDPE, LLDPE, MDPE, HDPE, mLLDPE, metallocene, PP, PA, EVA and EVOH. Maximum film widths range from 800 mm to 3400 mm, with output capacity documented from 100 kg/h on monolayer builds up to roughly 1500 kg/h on wide three-layer lines. Rewind units appear in single, double and back-to-back arrangements; monolayer Varex variants are documented with screw diameters of 60–90 mm.
The Varex is deployed by film producers manufacturing barrier and non-barrier films for food packaging, lamination, shrink and stretch hood, heavy-duty sacks, agricultural and medical film. Its multi-layer capability with tie and EVOH layers supports oxygen- and moisture-barrier structures for extended shelf life, while three-layer setups cover commodity PE film. Producers requiring frequent transitions between commodity and high-value barrier structures use the platform for its layer flexibility and broad material compatibility across polyolefin and engineering polymer blends.
Documented configurations range from monolayer Varex (E60L, E90 L, E90 30D) with screw diameters of 60–90 mm and outputs around 100–170 kg/h, through three-layer lines at widths up to 2800 mm and outputs to 1500 kg/h, to five-, seven-, nine- and eleven-layer barrier builds processing EVOH, PA and tie resins. The Varex II is documented at film widths to 3400 mm and 900 kg/h. Rewind options include single, double and back-to-back, matching commodity and barrier production workflows.
